Full Moon Rising

We had a spectacular night sky on Friday. Clear and cold with a full moon. All we were missing were howling wolves!

Valdy came to Port Sydney, Muskoka, Ontario

I spoke to my friends asking if they were going to the Valdy Concert in Port Sydney. (I try to see him whenever he's in Muskoka) They couldn't believe that you'd get a juno award winner to come to sing in a little town in Northern Ontario on a Wednesday night, in the Winter! One friend thought it was a tribute band and not the real person.

Thanks to Gord Haig and Linda Maclean, Valdy came to Port Sydney last night along with Linda Maclean and her band and Huntsville's Tina Turley. It was the opening night of the 53rd Port Sydney Winter Carnival.

A full house with the show starting just after 7 and not stopping until almost 11pm

In a small town, you can get up close and personal with the musicians as you can see from my photo.
And the concert only cost $20 ! Thanks sponsors!

Here's more concert photos.

Newlyweds went Dogsledding

Yesterday was a perfect day for dog sledding. Not too cold and a bit of snow in the air.
Our newlyweds visited North Ridge Ranch for an afternoon of dogsledding just north of Huntsville, and had a blast!

Yes ! ... We still have snow in Muskoka

We got some rain last night and its a bit soggy this morning but we in Muskoka, didn't lose all our snow like you did in Southern Ontario.

The rain stops this morning and winter weather returns this afternoon with colder temps and some snow over the next few days. (no more of that 4 letter "R" word)

Look out of our window to see the snow with our webcam.

All of a sudden ... A deer

Most times when I travel around the roads, I see deer or turkeys or a big wood pecker and no camera!. Today I had already driven by and then it dawned on me that I passed a deer in some trees. Lucky I had my camera in my pocket! I took one photo and she was gone...

The Snowmobile Trails are Great!

We have three guys staying with us from New York State. They snowmobile in Muskoka a lot. After a day of riding the trails from Beauview to Baysville to Dorset to Ox Narrows to Dwight to Port Sydney and back, they reported that the trails were in great shape this early on in the season.

Some of the lakes are frozen over and passable and some are not yet staked. They thought the Hill and Gully Club trails were the best!

To show their appreciation each year, they buy their Ontario snowmobile permits through our local Hill and Gully Snowmobile Club, Port Sydney. http://www.hgrsnowmobileclub.on.ca/ Buy where you ride.

Thanks for coming to Ontario!

Breakfast at Spring Lake

Yesterday morning, I had breakfast out at Spring Lake. Eggs and ham on a plate (not in a Mc -bag like I'm used to) The service was quick and the food was great! And always lots of coffee.

I went to the breakfast meeting of the Algonquin Snowmobile Club. The new owners are supporters of the club too.

Spring Lake is on Hwy 60 in Dwight, on the way to Algonquin Park by car and right on the snowmobile trail.

Lake of Bays Ice Rink

The lake ice was not quite thick enough at Christmas time to have a rink but it has been very cold especially at night, over the last week.

On Sunday, a number of ice huts materialized on the lake near the public dock and I could see that the mid part of the lake has just frozen over. Nobody went out there - Thank goodness!

I started on my first ice rink of the season today. I shovelled by hand using a scoop, as there was slush under the snow that my snowblower can't handle. As the ice gets thicker, the water comes up through the cracks to make slush in the snow or floods my ice rink! I wanted to get the snow off so that it wouldn't act as an insulator or create more slush that couldn't be moved
(Over the winter, I make at least three versions of an ice rink depending on the weather conditions)

Snow Tubing at Rock Ridge and Arrowhead Parks

Our family from Raleigh North Carolina sampled the snowtubing hills in the area.

We have Rock Ridge which provides 5 runs with the highest at 14 stories high, power lift to take you up the hill, and a heated licenced snack bar.

And Arrowhead Provincial Park with a "wicked" hill that is set up in the shape of a luge run. But ... you gotta walk back up this hill!

Travelled a Thousand Miles to Beauview

This is Jay's wish. To come all the way from Raleigh North Carolina, USA to Beauview, Huntsville, Muskoka Ontario with his family. A thousand mile trip by SUV to experience Winter!

They plan to go snowtubing, snow shoeing, downhill skiing/snowboarding and maybe go for a snowmobile trail ride.
Jay had a choice of going to Disneyworld or coming to Beauview. He chose Beauview because of the great experiences he had the last time they came. Jay wanted to introduce his girlfriend Meredith, to Canada.

Thanks for coming!
